Lightenuff stars first-up at Werribee

Smart gelding Lightenuff made a terrific return to racing with his solid win in the Racing Network Showcase Handicap (1105m) at Werribee.
Lightenuff had not raced since March 18 but had trialled twice in preparation for his first-up assignment in the $30,000 event.
Mark Zahra rode Lightenuff when the son of Lago Delight finished third in a Cranbourne trial on August 14 before travelling to Werribee to ride the five-year-old.
“I did (think he could win) on his trial,” Zahra said. “There were good horses around him in that trial and I thought he’d run well.”
Lightenuff showed good pace to sit handy to the leader before Zahra asked him to quicken approaching the home turn.
The Ken Keys stable representative showed plenty of tenacity over the closing stages of the race to score by 1-1/4 lengths to bring up his fifth win from 23 starts.
“There was a bit of a query on the ground on race day but he seemed to get through it in the trial,” Zahra said.
“I was off the bit about four or five hundred out but he has a crack and he got through it okay.
“He trialled quite well and toughed it out right to the line so I had no concerns with his fitness.”
The $18,000 winner’s cheque took Lightenuff’s prizemoney tally to more than $77,000 for his happy owner Mrs A Keys.
